The school has a long-term focus on teaching eight-year education with a general focus (79-41-K / 81). Students, after completing the common core in the first to fifth grades, can profile their study programme within optional subjects. The composition of these subjects allows students to focus on languages or humanities, as well as science or computer science and programming.
The eight-year course enables quality language education resulting from the continuity of language preparation at the lower and upper levels of the grammar school. There are two foreign languages in the curriculum. English is the basic language, and the students study the second language of their choice from the third grade: German, French, Russian, or Spanish. Within the framework of the optional subjects, Latin is offered.
Most graduates of the school continue with excellent results in their studies at universities. An integral part of the educational programme of the school includes various professional competitions and contests, excursions (including foreign ones), visits to exhibitions, theatres, and concerts, as well as professional lectures and discussions.
The school supports the physical education activities of the students by increasing the number of physical education lessons, organizing school inter-class competitions and sports events. In addition to the school gym and sports complex, the pupils also use the gym and the sports hall of the adjacent sports grammar school. Weekly sports courses are part of the PE classes – in the second and fifth grades there is a ski course, in the seventh grade there is a sports course focusing on cycling and sports games, and we organize swimming training for the pupils of the third grade.
School teams are successful in competitions organized by the Association of School Sports Clubs. We emphasize all sports activities for their significant health and relaxation benefits for the students, but also as part of the active prevention programme.
There are 28 classrooms in the building, 13 of which are specialized (lecture rooms and laboratories for teaching science subjects, classrooms for teaching music education, art education, and foreign languages). All the classrooms are equipped with multimedia technology allowing interactive presentation of information. For teaching computer science and programming, we have two computer science classrooms and one robotics classroom. The computer science classrooms are also used in other subjects (biology, geography, history, ZSV, mathematics, foreign languages, etc.). The students have access to computer technology and the internet even outside the classroom, in the corridors of the school and in the study room there are computer terminals and a Wi-Fi connection is available.
The pupils have the opportunity to attend afternoon hobby clubs such as sports games, programming and robotics, a journalistic and astronomical club, a writing-all-ten club,a hobby club for girls, and the choir. The choir „Pátečníci“ operates in the school and performs not only at school events but also in public (Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, competition show of secondary school choirs, Gymnasium Cantant, Umob Ostrava-Jih events, MMO, etc.). The students of the journalism club publish the school magazine Octavian. We prepare adaptation courses for the first-grade and fifth-grade students. Each student has their own locker.
The students´ interests are represented by the student council which submits proposals to the school management for improving the school environment and the organization of studies and prepares various events and competitions for their classmates.
The Association of Parents and Friends of Grammar School Ostrava-Zábřeh works as a separate legal entity. In cooperation with the teachers of the school and the student council, it organizes events for the students. The school is also supported by financial contributions from the budget of the Association which sponsors the publication of the student magazine, book prizes for students, souvenirs for graduates, and prizes for winners of school competitions. It also reimburses travel expenses for students representing the school in regional and national competitions.
